Fortaleza 2008 Proposals/Needs:

News/Updates:

The focus of our mission projects in Fortaleza Brazil are related to PRECE -Heart of Students Institute. PRECE is a phenomenal faith based educational program founded by Manuel Andrade Neto. Andrade is a professor of the sciences at University of Fortaleza. He started this educational program with 7 students on his family compound of land in Cipo, a small rural town 75 miles outside of Fortaleza. The focus of this program is to help the poorest of the poor in northeastern Brazil complete high school and gain admission into the Federal University in Brazil. The typical admission rate from public school into the federal university is 4%! Most PRECE students had even previously dropped out of the public school system.

PRECE, formerly know as The Cipo Project, began 12 years ago with 7 students. It now has 12 satellite campuses, over 500 students, and 100 graduates in the university. PRECE teaches using a model of cell groups led by a university student who has proficiency in a particular subject. The teachers and school directors volunteer their time out of their commitment to their local communities and education itself. The public schools in the area are beginning t6 study PRECE's successful system and working to partner with them. This great educational system has the ability to transform the inferior school system throughout northeastern Brazil, the rest of the country, and could be duplicated in other areas of the world!

PRECE's most pressing need is the completion of two school buildings, one that is under major renovation and one that has been constructed from the ground up, but needs to complete the last wing. There are a variety of other needs also.

Renovation of Benfica campus to be used as a PRECE campus for 100 students, a student center for the PRECE graduates at the university for studying, tutoring, Bible study, and fellowship. It will cost an additional $55,000 to complete rooms, flooring, plumbing, electricity, and furnishings.

The Pirambu School will require another $22,000 for the floor, walls, roof, furnishings and computers. This school is the beacon of hope in a very poor ghetto in Fortaleza. It is used for a PRECE campus, an after school program for 4-11 year olds, and a job training center for computers, sewing, and electricians.

Chaplain - PRECE would like to hire a full time chaplain to serve the Benfica campus (which is across the street from the university) and the Pirambu campus. Many of the PRECE students in the university are from small, rural towns and they are overwhelmed in the big city of Fortaleza with a population of 2-1/2 million. A full time chaplain would help keep these young adults grounded in their faith and their values. The cost is $700 per month, or $8400 annually.

Sponsor a Student - $100 per month could sponsor a student for food and transportation to their home towns on the weekends to teach in the PRECE campus they attended.

The completion and renovation of the new school we have built in Fortaleza, Brazil. This is very exciting for this DESOLATE urban ghetto!
