July 2008: Twenty-two people from four churches came together for a week in the DR to build and fellowship with each other and Dominicans. We gathered from Ohio, Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia. We worked long and hard on putting concrete on the roof of the sewing school in Batay 7 (Haitian refugee camp #7). We also spent time with the kids, sharing sunglasses, balls, stickers, and clothing with them. They loved playing baseball with our group – even when the baseball was a football and the bat was a stick. They also enjoyed the animal balloons and juggling!! Angela from Ohio spent time teaching several English classes during the week. Several from the group worked in the clinic, varnishing the shelves in the storeroom, and then organizing and replacing all the supplies.

We also spent a day working on a church in Cabral. Other groups had built the walls from the foundation up and added roof trusses and were adding the tin roof – all in just 3 weeks! We helped this great group from Georgia add a concrete floor – we had a mixer for most of the day, until it gave out. And then it was back to hand mixing.

Another part of our group built latrines – 4 total were built during the week in Batay 7. This is a great help in reducing disease for all living there.

We had time for the beaches – beautiful beaches, one with 8 foot waves!!! The mountains hovered around us everywhere we went, and the ocean was not far away. We delivered baseball equipment, and then watched the team play that evening in a tournament. We gave out solar powered audio Bibles to several people in the Batays and played Frisbee and ring-around-the-rosy with the kids.

The Mission House was a very comfortable place to stay, and Pastor Pedro and his family were wonderful hosts and provided us with wonderful Dominican meals. We thoroughly enjoyed church on Saturday evening – the music was amazing!

There is plenty of opportunity and need in the DR – we’d love for your group to come and participate!
