Central Honduras is a veritable Garden of Eden with stunning mountains towering thru the clouds and covered in pineapple, banana, sugar cane, coffee, and coconuts. Unfortunately, for the people who live in the small remote mountain villages, there is a severe lack of medical care and educational opportunities. In a unique arrangement, the Family Practice Department of the Indiana School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana, has received Honduran Government approval to build a clinic in the Taulabe region. This clinic will not only serve the people of these remote villages, but will provide the opportunity for Family Practice Residents to train and work with Honduran Physicians in the area of Family Medicine. With the infant mortality rate extremely high in the area, this clinic will be a Godsend to the residents and their children. Simple and curable diseases such as infections, intestinal diseases, and bronchitis take many young lives needlessly. The clinic's focus will be Pre-natal care, OB-GYN, children, and Dentistry. The clinic will serve about 47,000 residents in about 50 villages scattered in the region. The clinic site has been purchased and a concrete slab has been poured to date. Lack of funds and volunteers has unfortunately halted the project. The building plans provide for a two-story block structure. The first floor will be for patient care and the second floor, living quarters for the Physicians. Mark Searcy, a professional builder with the Christian Community of Honduras organization, has estimated that project with cost approximately $200,000. This is a remarkable opportunity to make a significant change for these people. Rivers of the World, working in cooperation with Christian Community of Honduras, is committed to making this clinic and its health education program a reality.
