Where’s Ben? In The Congo!
Posted by: | Posted: May 29th, 2010 | CommentsAlive and well in Congo! Omba and I worked with the bank today to get our books in order and we are fine! From there we went to see the new barge we are building! She is 36 meters long and looks like 3 meters deep and will carry 300 tons of supplies to missionaries and hospitals up the Congo River from Kinshasa to Kisangani and back again!
The river docks remind me of going back in time. Thousands of people sell clothes, food, fish and vegetables in tiny stalls that line the dirt road heading to the docks. Muscled men, covered in fine white manioc powder struggle with 200 pound sacks of the stuff- loading it on to and off of barges waiting to head upriver.
Tiny babies sleep on rags while young mothers do each others’ hair in the latest “do”. It is a swirling mass of humanity that very probably looks today as it has for eons.
In one very real respect, it has never changed. In another, neither have the needs. I am so proud that ROW can be found in the midst of all of the life we experience here and around the world.
It is so good to see Omba and friends we have had for years. We’ve spent our lives together – and there is still so much to do!

Master Bladesmith Walter Brend Creates Official ROW Knife

After almost a year, Walter created one of his famous Model 2 knives for Ben Mathes to tote wherever he goes! Mr. Walter was also kind enough to feature Ben & ROW on his website in February of 2009.
