Travel Tips & Hints
One of the more unique aspects of being involved in a ROW mission trip, is the travel itself. Many times the people who participate in a trip have never been to a foreign country, much less an under-developed foreign country. ROW has always prided itself on providing experienced and knowledgeable guides to help in any way necessary on each trip. With that in mind, the ROW leadership believes that by providing detailed information up-front about trips to the different countries in which we have on-going projects, we might encourage those who have never thought about it to go on a ROW trip. At the same time, the information that we have documented here includes useful travel tips that can be helpful to even the most experienced ROW travelers.
First of all, we’d like to recommend the book “Before You Go” by Jack Hempfling. Experienced short term mission leader and trainer Jack Hempfling takes you on a 40 day journey that will bring you face to face with attitudes and issues that if not addressed, can make you or your group ineffective on the field. Get the most for your short term mission effort, finances, and preparation by getting your hearts ready. Walk with the Lord through this devotional and be equipped, informed, and made ready to joyfully pierce the darkness with all that you do. It’s available here from Xulon Press for $14.99
Just a quick note: Starting April 1st, 2008, Delta Airlines will be charging higher fees for checking baggage at the curb and for checking more than one bag. Here’s a link to the article. Call the airlines before trips and ask to learn about new or unexpected fees. Many airlines are doing this to compensate for higher fuel costs.
Effective January 1, 2008, you may not pack spare lithium batteries in your checked baggage - that is, the baggage you give to the airline for handling. For personal use, there is generally no restriction on the number of spare batteries allowed in carry-on baggage. That includes cell phone batteries, “hearing aid” button cells, and AA/AAA batteries available in retail stores, as well as almost all standard laptop computer batteries. However, you may carry no more than two larger batteries, in the range of 100 - 300 watt hour rating. These include some extended life laptop computer batteries, such as the “universal” lithium ion battery.
