Each year during Lent through Easter, a celebration called “rara” takes place in Haiti. This high holy voodoo season includes singing, wild dancing and playing homemade instruments. Women often form groups under the supervision of a whip-and-whistle wielding leader.

Storms of Life

Many residents along the Eastern Seaboard are accustomed to the affects of a hurricane. Hurricane Jeanne, which struck in September 2004, resulted in widespread devastation in the Caribbean and sections of the Southeast United States. As a tropical storm, Jeanne destroyed much of the country of Haiti through massive flooding and mudslides. Over 3,000 deaths in Haiti resulted from this storm.

Transforming Tragedy Into Victory

While traveling in South Korea, I witnessed an amazing example of proclaiming victory in the midst of tragedy. I met a group of people who were afflicted by the horrible disease of leprosy, yet, they claimed quite a victory. Leprosy left its mark on this group of elderly people who were disfigured and blind.

There are areas of Africa rich in minerals, such as diamonds. What would you do for a chance to find such a valuable treasure? Witch doctors in these areas tell families if they want to find diamonds, they have to take the life of one of their children. They even sell a potion to assist families in this unthinkable act.

Anyone who knows me understands how important I think it is to take naps and rest. I was sound asleep in my truck on the banks of the Brahmaputra River in Bangladesh when two beggars tapped on my window. The sudden noise startled me and when I awoke I saw two women standing before me, one was carrying her friend on her back.
