On a trip to the southern Toledo district of Belize, we had a new person with us. He managed to turn over our dugout canoe and fill our boots with water. Then we had to hike from Santa Ana, near the Moho River, to Midway, seven miles through the jungle. This young athlete was not quite up to the task and he passed out from heat exhaustion.

When my children were little I did one of those unspeakable things that parents sometimes do—I bought my sons a drum set. What an interesting experience! They would pound away and all it did was prepare me for serving in the jungles abroad where drums can be heard pounding all night long.

There are advantages and disadvantages to having been born in the Southern part of the United States. When I preach in regions such as Michigan and Minnesota, where my Southern accent is quite noticeable, sometimes it is necessary for people to have an interpreter in order to understand my English. I find this charming, they find it funny and we all just have a great time.

The boat had broken down and we had to hike out of the jungle. Our crew decided we would take whatever trail went up and if the trail forked, we would go to the left. We set out on our journey and finally made it to an old church where we spent the night on the floor.

We don’t think much about this convenience. Yet, grocery stores are scarce in many countries where most people swap and sell produce and other items at open-air markets.
