It is that wonderful time of the year when many of us jot down our New Year’s resolutions. Yes, I too make some of the same resolutions as many folks. Such as, cut down on eating so much chocolate, cake, ice cream and eating in excess, period.

It is that time of the year that we look forward to a new year and we reflect on the year that has gone by. There are about three things that stand out in my mind when I look back upon the radio ministry of Rivers of the World (ROW) in 2008. First and foremost is the abundant care and concern our radio listeners showed me and my wife, Mickie, during her recent battle with cancer. She is still fighting this battle so please continue to pray for her and for all those enduring similar situations.

What if I told you that I have two words that could change your life? These two little words could transform how you celebrate Christmas. The Christmas season is a time of tremendous joy and celebration, a time to gather with friends and family. However, for many folks, this joyous time of the year is overshadowed by sadness, loneliness and memories of happier days gone by. The weight of these emotions can make it extremely difficult for some people to keep going.

By the time you read this I will have sand in my shoes, sweat on my brow and I’ll be deep in the deserts of the Middle East. Just in time for Christmas, I’m traveling to see my wife, Dr. Mickie Mathis, whom I haven’t seen since August.

It’s Christmas and I know all of you are expecting me to say it so I might as well. Okay, just in case you’re curious, I am a double extra large, I love things that are soft and I enjoy long walks on the beach. And, it’s Christmas! I’m just teasing, but I won’t tease you about my goal this Christmas season, which is to raise the support for my entire staff around the world before the New Year begins. With this goal accomplished I will be able to check this “to do” item off my list and move on to other things.

You’ve heard me say it before but it is that time of the year, the Christmas season, in which we seem to pass ourselves in the mall and traveling on the highways. I personally have seen myself in three to four airports across the country just in the last four weeks. During this time, I was in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and South Carolina.

The football and track coaches I had while growing up in Memphis, Tenn. left an indelible impression on my brain. I can still recall when coaches Floyd Lowery and Tyree used to get so mad at us boys. They would begin this tirade of, “You know I’ve had enough of you boys. You ain’t got no backbone. You don’t want to play no sports. I’ve just had it with you boys. Now go on and stand up and let’s get in the game.”

A Rivers of the World (ROW) team from Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Ga. recently met ROW staff members Wuk and Drew McIlreavy in Atlanta, bound for Siguatepeque, Honduras. The team was equipped and prepared to work on our medical clinic under construction in Taulabe and ready to conduct vacation Bible school in remote mountain villages.

Okay, I admit it. I’m a softy. If you smile at me, bat your eyelashes at me and you’re an 11-year-old little girl, I just turn to jelly. I was recently visiting St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Lincoln, Neb., trying to keep Georgia from being overrun by pheasants, and preaching the Word. While at the church, this beautiful little girl named Vanessa Lopez, came up to me and shook my hand and said, “Tell me more about your digital audio Bibles. I think they’re cool.”

I just recently visited my friend, preacher Billie Watson from Rice, Va., who is a young 91-years-old. He was given a diagnosis from his doctor that he didn’t like. After researching through medical books and working with his physician, Billie discovered that perhaps things were not as bad as he thought they were.
