Five, four, three, two, one, Happy New Year! Can’t you just hear fireworks exploding and people screaming! Honestly, I don’t really get all that worked up about a new year. Actually, I probably won’t even be awake when midnight rolls around!

Oh, my goodness, I didn’t know they let him on the plane looking like that! Tom Flaim, Dominican Republic (DR) Batey Program Manager for World Water Relief, stepped off the plane from the DR looking like a dust covered Santa Claus! He traveled to the DR ignited by a tremendous challenge given to him by Rivers of the World (ROW).

As another year winds down many of us take time to reflect back over the year and we start planning for the new year ahead. When I think about 2009, I recall my travels to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Peru and throughout the United States.

Family and friends are scattered all over the world this time of the year and we really long for them to be home with us. During the Christmas season we are bombarded with all those television commercials showing Joey who has just arrived back from the front lines, he walks up the steps, knocks on the door and surprises Mom and the rest of the family. It is tempting to be a bit upset because we want our loved ones home too.

There is a very special group of people that I want to talk to today. Your children may be grown and gone and because you live miles apart you are unable to get together for Christmas. I would rather focus upon my personal relationship with the Lord and on my appreciation for the birth of baby Jesus in Bethlehem than to worry about what extravagant present I’m going to buy someone.

I recently helped my friend, Rick, clean out his parent’s house in preparation for moving them to an assisted living facility where their lives will be a bit easier. I was up to my elbows in dust and old clothes when I heard Rick holler as if he was dying. I dropped everything and ran upstairs to find him lying on the floor laughing so hard that he was struggling to breathe.

It is said that it will happen to everyone eventually and it recently happened to me. I got the flu. The flu shut me down and forced me to stay home, take it easy and drink plenty of fluids. Since my eyes were too fuzzy to read, I also spent a lot of time in prayer.

I am sure many of you know from experience that good directions can lead you exactly where you need to go. Yes, I have been lost before and I am sure you have too. And, yes, for some of us, it is very difficult to stop and ask for directions. I traveled recently to Lincoln, Neb. to see my dear friends at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church and I had stayed at a different hotel than before.

Have you discovered that when you say something good about someone it has a ripple effect and ends up blessing others? The contrary is true as well. If you say something that is not good about someone it will end up getting back to that person and doing nothing but causing pain.
