The God of All Possibilities

When the angel Gabriel spoke to Mary describing the holy birth that would take place he said, in Luke 1:37:

“For nothing is impossible with God.”

As Christians, when we are facing a particularly difficult circumstance or trial the world may tell us there is no hope and the outcome of the situation is impossible. This was the case in the summer of 2003.

The Army of the Congo had previously stolen a Rivers of the World (ROW) ship and held captive staff members for three months. The release of the staff members was a testimony of God answering prayers. Although the Army kept the ship, the ship’s captain later sank her.

These turn of events did not deter ROW’s mission in the Congo. In June 2003, work began on building the Miss Angie Anderson. ROW staff and volunteers gave six months of their time away from home to gather supplies and move them from Kinshasa to Lusambo, off the Sankuru River. Twelve men then built the ship upside down on a sandbar in the middle of the Sankuru River. Once the hull was complete, the men used logs to create rollers, which allowed the ship to be rolled over and pushed into the river. Our new ship was now afloat. The impossible in man’s eyes became a reality.

The Miss Angie Anderson, named after a beloved missionary in that region, carries supplies for schools in the Lusambo territory, hauls Bibles for distribution and transports equipment and medicines for stocking the local hospital. The ship can reach 150,000 people annually along the Sankuru River. This vessel provides hope in a vast land where hope dissipates much like the mist on a foggy morning over the Sankuru River.
