Calm in the Storm
It is a pretty summer day as you are taking a drive, listening to some uplifting music and all of a sudden you see them…flashing blue lights in your rear view mirror. You pull over, come to a complete stop and your heart is racing. There just isn’t anything more frightening than that, is there?
While traveling the Sankuru River in the Congo we experienced a far more frightening situation than being pulled over by a police officer. We were traveling in a loaded dug out canoe with a small outboard motor when soldiers suddenly poured out of the forest. The soldiers had abandoned their uniforms, but not their weapons.
With guns raised, the soldiers screamed for us to come back. Very carefully, we turned our canoe around as fear gripped us. Thankfully, Umba, with his gentle and kind spirit, was able to smooth out this dangerous situation.
The Lord is also gentle and kind and always with us. No matter our troubles and no matter our challenges, the Lord will stay with us and be with us through the most difficult times of our lives.
He gives us this promise in Psalm 116:5-6:
“The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The Lord protects the simplehearted; when I was in great need, he saved me.”
