Carry the Word
Now don’t any of you accuse me of witchcraft, voodoo or superstition because of some of the things that I carry with me on my travels. I would like to hear some of your stories, though.
Many of us who serve in strange places overseas often carry things in our backpacks that remind us of home. In my backpack is a small Ziploc baggie that contains an American flag that was folded by a U.S. Marine in Iraq who presented it to me. The flag is very small. I also have a wooden cross that was created for me by a young boy in North Carolina. Also in my backpack is a piece of cloth that has the Big Dipper sewed into the cloth, created by 3, Rivers of the World’s (ROW) executive administrator.
This may seem a bit strange, but I also carry some hair and fur from family, friends and creatures that I love. Sometimes I even cut a twig of South Georgia pine so I can smell Dixie while I’m lying in the sand in a foreign land far from home. Is there something that you carry with you each day that reminds you of home and the people whom you love?
If you don’t have a particular item that you carry, may I suggest you consider carrying a small Bible. In Hebrews 4:12 (Amplified) we learn:
“For the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing, and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts and purposes of the heart.”
Having a Bible on hand at all times will enable you to stay on the straight and narrow path. It will also remind you of the tremendous sacrifice that Christ made on your behalf, paving the way for you to spend an eternity with Him in heaven.
