My high level and important meeting at the local coffee shop with 3, executive administrator with Rivers of the World (ROW), was divinely interrupted. 3’s attention span had once again drifted and this time I asked, “What’s going on?” She replied, “Look out the window.”

Prior to heading to Iraq, I visited a church and I brought along my bulletproof vest that I would be wearing while serving alongside our troops. The response to the vest was overwhelming.

I admit it, I don’t know much about football, but, I do know where Bembanga is! In case you don’t know, Bembanga is located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I am often accused of not being up-to-date on current events. That may be true, but I know where some of the most remote places in the world are and I even know folks personally who live in these areas.

I am sure that you have had this situation occur before and as you know, it is quite awkward at best. I was in a store along with everybody else who was returning items that just didn’t fit or looked silly. All of a sudden, I heard this grunt behind me. I looked up and again I heard the grunt. I thought, “What in the world is that?” I turned to face the noise and said, “Can I help you?” The man said, “Yes, I am trying to get past you.”

As another year winds down many of us take time to reflect back over the year and we start planning for the new year ahead. When I think about 2009, I recall my travels to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Peru and throughout the United States.

It is the Christmas season and it may be a bit difficult for you.

It is said that it will happen to everyone eventually and it recently happened to me. I got the flu. The flu shut me down and forced me to stay home, take it easy and drink plenty of fluids. Since my eyes were too fuzzy to read, I also spent a lot of time in prayer.

You know, it seems to me that supporters of Rivers of the World (ROW) have been praying for my family for years. I want all of you to know that I am so grateful for your faithful prayers, especially for my youngest son, Adam, who served three tours in Iraq in the Marine Corps.

Whom do you turn to when times are tough? Let me tell you about my friend, Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin (Ret.). He served as the United States Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence. It was Jerry who once said, “It was God whom I relied on when I nearly lost an arm in battle. It was God whom I prayed to when my men went to war. It was God whom I cried out to when my men returned maimed and bleeding. It was also God whom I cried out to when they didn’t return at all.”

Many folks have been enjoying the warm summer months of July. Well, I took a little detour this month and traveled to a place that experiences winter from May through September. I crossed over into the Southern Hemisphere and spent some time in Paraguay and Argentina.
