Definition of Love
Responding to God’s call is just not that difficult. You just have to do it. We had received word that there were children dying in a hospital in southern Belize. To me, that is absolutely not acceptable. We were told that they were not dying because of poor treatment, but instead, because that hospital didn’t have the equipment necessary to keep those children going and growing.
It didn’t take me long to book my flight, pack my bags and head to Punta Gorda, Belize. The goal was to work with the medical leadership of the hospital in question to change the facility in such a way that the children being cared for would have a chance to survive.
What we found at that hospital was far from what we expected. We discovered dedicated staff and a pretty well equipped hospital. Since equipment didn’t seem to be an issue, we decided to tackle what the hospital really needed, which was a maternity ward. That project is expected to begin by Rivers of the World (ROW) around January 2010.
I really love answering God’s call! What I have discovered, though, is that you will not be at peace until you respond to God’s will for your life. I’m certainly grateful for that!
All throughout scripture there are instructions on how we are to treat others. Jesus modeled the type of love and sacrifice that we are to demonstrate in our dealings with other people, especially with fellow believers. Sometimes when we read God’s Word we really have to pray and seek understanding. This isn’t the case with 1 John 3:17-18, which is very straightforward:
“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”
If you profess to be a Christian, take a moment today to do an assessment of your words and actions. If Jesus is the very definition of love and if Christ is within us, then wouldn’t it make sense that we too must be the definition of love in all our contacts with others?
