Desire to Know Him

[ 0 ] August 16, 2009 |

Okay kids, do you have everything? Let’s see, backpack, pencils, paper, clean shoes and clothes and hair that looks, well, pretty good! It’s the first day of school! I used to love this when my two boys were little. They would get so excited about the first day of school and being able to make new friends, meet new teachers and explore new opportunities to learn.

We would make sure that we had everything all lined up and ready to go, especially on that first day of school. We would stop at the front door of our house before we left for school and we would all say a prayer that went something like this, “Lord, prepare my heart to learn, to love, to listen and to show respect to the people I’ll meet today. Send me off to school and let it be your day, dear Jesus.” What a fun way to start the day!

We are very blessed in the United States that our children have so many different options for achieving a good education. The opportunity to go to school is not a reality in many countries overseas. Seeing kids head off for their first day of school knowing they will have opportunities to learn and grow makes me want to grab a book and go read! Take time today to read something educational to stimulate your mind and keep it active. Also, take time today to pray for the children in your community and their teachers, for a safe and productive school year.

As Christians, if we want more understanding in our lives it must first begin with a desire to know more about Christ. We are instructed in Proverbs 9:10:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

To live our lives with a spirit of apathy with total disregard to the sovereignty of God is not wise. When we begin to see God for who He is, as displayed through the life of His Son, Jesus, that is the beginning of wisdom. From that point on we can develop a passion to know more about Christ and therein discover true understanding.
