Equipped For Life

[ 0 ] June 21, 2009 |

There is a lot happening in June for Rivers of the World (ROW) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. ROW’s Congo-Kasai director is Jimmy Shafe, who is a wonderful, wonderful man. He and several others are currently in the region conducting several projects, including a stop at the School for Single Mothers in Tshikaji, located just outside of Kananga.

The ROW Congo-Kasai Chapter recently funded year two of this school, a project that is coordinated through Institut Medical Chretien du Kasai (IMCK). Graduation for the first class of 20 women took place in December 2008. The class size for year two has increased to 30 women enrolled in the 12-month program. During the course of the year, the women are taught science/hygiene, geography, French, mathematics and sewing.

Learning to sew gives these women a valuable skill they can use to provide for their families. Upon graduation from the program, each woman receives their own sewing machine as an incentive to launch their own micro-business. The 2009 operating budget for year two of the School for Single Mothers is just over $16,000. Would you consider praying for these precious women and possibly sending a contribution? Let us partner together to teach these women a marketable skill, which will enable them to have a better life for themselves and their children.

We are instructed in 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12:

“Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.”

As much as we are physically able, we should strive to work and better our lives and do so in a way that brings honor and glory to God.
