Fan the Flames

I just love the way the Lord uses some of us to light up a party, no matter what. I recently spoke on the phone with my wife, Dr. Mickie Mathes, who is living in the Middle East. As many of you might know by now, she recently finished her last round of chemotherapy for a very difficult form of cancer and is now wearing a wig.

While at a friend’s house recently, Mickie took off her wig so she could get a makeover. Do you know what a makeup mirror is? You know the type of mirror that has all those nice bright lights on it. Well Mickie placed her wig a bit too close to the mirror and it caught on fire!

Talk about a sight to behold! People were laughing and screaming at the same time. Mickie was all dolled up and ready to go out but had no wig! In the midst of all the commotion, the front door bell rings. Standing at the door is Mickie’s friend, Vicky, who dropped by unannounced. Vicky said, “I don’t know if you need this or not but I had it in my closet. It’s a wig that I’ve never worn.” Would you believe it fit Mickie perfectly! God sure provides when we light up the world!

If you’ve been a Christian for any length of time then you likely are aware of the fact that we each have unique spiritual gifts given to us from God. These spiritual gifts are to be used to edify and encourage the body of Christ. Some people try to squelch their gifts instead of using them as God intended. Paul warns us in 1 Thessalonians 5:19:

“Do not put out the Spirit’s fire.”

When we knowingly fail to use the spiritual gifts God has given us we not only are being disobedient to the Holy Spirit, our congregation misses out on hearing from God in the unique way in which He has gifted us. Today, seek to fan into flame your spiritual gifts.
