Get in the Game

[ 0 ] November 9, 2006 |

Many of you know by now that our administrator at Rivers of the World (ROW) is a woman by the name of 3. She and her family love football. They will spend all weekend sitting on the sofa, eating who knows what, and watching football games. I think that is great. It is not my thing, but it sure is hers!

As you and your family and friends gather around the TV this football season I want you to keep in mind one thing—a player has to be put in the game in order to be effective. Everyone who plays football wants to get off the bench, get in the game and get the job done.

Our lives as Christians are much like a football game. Our Lord is the great coach who is calling all the plays and we are the players in the game making things happen. He doesn’t desire anyone to sit on the bench. It is up to us though to figure out which position we are to play. Regardless of our position, we all have an important role to play on God’s team.

God’s word tells us in Ephesians 4:11-13:

“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

Some are called to lead God’s people, but all are called to follow Christ. As you sit in the pew this Sunday and listen to your pastor bring forth the message the Lord has given him, remember that none of us were called to keep the pews warm. The sermon we hear on Sunday, the lesson we listen to in Sunday school and the teachings we hear on Wednesday nights are meant to build up our faith and prepare us to go forth and carry the Gospel to the entire world.

Seek the Lord today to find your position on God’s team then get in the game!
