Getting Our Attention

[ 0 ] August 8, 2009 |

Have you experienced those times in your life when it seems like God is trying to chase you down in order to get your attention? When I was in Argentina recently, I watched a demonstration of a weapon called a bola, which is Spanish for ball. I had forgotten how this weapon is used.

A bola consists of three weights or balls, wrapped in leather and attached to the end of three ropes. One ball is smaller and lighter than the other two. Gauchos, who are similar to American cowboys, hurl this weapon. They throw the bola with great precision in order to entangle the legs of cattle or other animals.

Sometimes I feel like those three balls are the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I can envision God just throwing himself at us, wrapping himself around us and making us drop to the ground on our knees. We would certainly stop whatever we were doing and God would have our complete attention! I don’t know about you, but I am grateful for those times when the Lord gets my attention. I am so thankful that God loves us enough to reach out to us in anyway that He can to lovingly make us aware of our situation.

Keep your eyes open today and if you see a bola coming, duck, get on your knees and thank the Lord! Also, take time today to read Proverbs 3:11-12:

“My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”

We can be certain that if the Lord is disciplining us He is doing so out of love because that is the very nature of God. He longs for us to be more and more like His Son, Jesus, and therefore must correct us, rebuke us and discipline us from time to time to keep us on the straight and narrow path.
