Holy Greetings

[ 0 ] May 3, 2006 |

I’ll see ya’ll later! We Southerners have some interesting ways of saying hello and good-bye. This is true all over the world.

In India, people greet you by bowing slightly with their hands pressed together, palms touching in front of their chest, and saying “namaste.” Translated, this means, “I worship the God I see in you,” or, “the divine in me greets the divine in you.”

There is also a beautiful greeting in Iraq that means, “Meeting you has been a holy experience.”

How do most Americans greet one another? Do we simply say a quick, “hey” or “hello?” As Christians, we are to imitate our Lord and Savior in our words and actions. When we greet others, we should do so as if we were greeting Jesus himself. Make it a holy experience by saying things that are positive and encouraging. Lift your friends up with good comments, uplifting news and lots of hope.

Let us remind ourselves today of Hebrews 3:13 where we are instructed to:

“…encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

Greet someone today with exuberance, letting him or her know how wonderful it is spending time with them and how much they are cherished. It only takes a second to say something kind and uplifting and it may very well be the exact words someone needs to hear today.
