Listen and Obey

[ 0 ] December 30, 2008 |

It is that wonderful time of the year when many of us jot down our New Year’s resolutions. Yes, I too make some of the same resolutions as many folks. Such as, cut down on eating so much chocolate, cake, ice cream and eating in excess, period.

In addition to my usual New Year’s resolutions regarding eating and exercise, I want to add a few additional resolutions. This year I resolve to do whatever I can to grow the economy of this country. I also want to do whatever I can to encourage those who serve our country overseas, whether they are in the military or are serving in God’s army. I want to take more time in 2009 to pray more often for my friends and family and lift them up in a positive way to the Lord so they will be blessed abundantly.

Above all else, I resolve in the upcoming year to listen to God, seeking how He wants me to live my life and then I resolve to do something about it. What are your resolutions for 2009? Do they include any spiritual resolutions? We are instructed in James 1:22:

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

This Scripture couldn’t be any clearer. It is not enough for us to sit in a pew every week and listen to the Word of God preached. We must obey His word as demonstrated in every aspect of our lives. This includes our thoughts, the goals and plans we have for our future, how we treat family and friends, how we act around non-Christians and the activities we participate in outside of church.

I encourage you to begin today seeking God’s will for your life. During your times of prayer make sure you pause long enough to listen to the Lord and resolve to do as He instructs. May the Lord bless you richly this coming year!
