Make Disciples

[ 0 ] March 29, 2008 |

Have you ever spent a leisurely afternoon watching nature programs featuring the migration of animals? You witness Barren Ground Caribou numbering in the tens of thousands traveling hundreds of miles between their summer and wintering grounds. In another segment you watch the massive wildebeest of the Serengeti-Mara area of East Africa during their migration. Most of us have also watched shows featuring salmon enduring their long journey from their oceanic feeding grounds to their freshwater spawning grounds. These migrations are remarkable and quite impressive.

It is that time of the year that we call the migration of the missionaries. During the summer months if you travel through any local airport you are likely to see teams decked out in T-shirts, bandanas and hats heading off to serve in some of the most remote parts of the world.

I had an interesting encounter recently while standing in line at an airport in Lima, Peru. I was accosted by a crowd from Calvary Chapel of Durango, located in Durango, Colo. They were in the country sharing the Word of God with people located along the rivers. It was so exciting to run into them. Standing there in line we swapped stories about our different adventures.

The next time you’re in an airport and you see folks who are obviously heading overseas for the sake of the Gospel, take the time to pray for them. With the power of the Holy Spirit residing within us, we, as Christians are commanded to go forth and make disciples. We read about this directive in Matthew 28:18-20:

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”

Jesus was speaking to His disciples, yet, this instruction still applies today to all followers of Christ. We should seize every opportunity the Lord gives us to tell others about His saving grace, regardless if we are speaking to our neighbor or traveling abroad to meet people from another country.
