One Chance

[ 0 ] July 12, 2011 |

I realize that we are supposed to slow down in the summertime and enjoy the weather, outdoor activities and time with our families. It seems, though, that there are so many things going on during the summer that many of us end up running around frantically and constantly in need of a vacation.

If we are not careful, life can slip right through our hands and we will miss out on some very important moments and treasured events that will never take place again. Two of my favorite people have just turned another page in their lives. My daddy, Dr. Gordon Mathes, just turned 86 and my dear friend, Lt. Gen. Sam Wilson (Ret.) is 87. Wow, what tremendous history these men have experienced!

Both of these men are taking life a little bit slower these days. It gives them a chance to look back over their lives and to try and forget the sorrowful parts but to rejoice and celebrate all the joys. I know you are probably like me this summer, busy, busy, busy. However, I want to encourage you to spend some time sitting quietly looking back over your life. Reflect upon the disappointments, sorrows and hurts, but also remember the joys, mercy, love and grace bestowed upon you from God. Praise Him for where He has brought you from and thank Him for where He is leading you.

We serve a very creative God who is always doing new things. We are instructed in Isaiah 43:18-19:

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.”

It is always good to recall our past in order for us to not forget all that God has done. This bolsters our faith and gives us more courage to face our current problems. We are only given one life, one day at a time, and we only have one chance to make a difference for Christ. Review your past every now and then but don’t camp out there. Let go of past mistakes and hurts and embrace each new day God has given you, realizing He is indeed doing a new thing.
