Priceless Possessions
I developed an unusual “friendship” in southern Belize while I was sharing a meal with a farmer in a small village. This was not an ordinary meal, it was a huge iguana. In many places in Central America you can find iguanas basking in the bright sunshine along the Caribbean. These lizards are believed to have medicinal value by curing or relieving various human ailments. The iguana’s delicate white flesh is supposed to taste like chicken. Believe me, it is not very good!
After I shared a meal of iguana with this farmer, he decided we were friends and he took me into his hut. Very secretively, he reached under the bed and pulled out this treasure. It was a jade Mayan spear tip that was made in about 900 AD and worth a fortune. This new “friend” of mine asked me if I would smuggle the spear tip into America, sell it on the black market, and send him the money. I told him I was not about to take part in his plan and let him know that his treasure belonged to the people of Belize.
Fellow Christian, what are your three favorite treasures? How many of you just said your house, car and your money? Many of you probably thought your spouse and your children.
It is good to invest our time into meaningful pursuits and relationships, but I encourage you instead to follow the Lord’s instructions in Matthew 6:19-21:
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Today, determine to seek priceless possessions, such as Godly wisdom, compassion for lost souls, guidance from the Holy Spirit and Christ-like love for others.
