This Moment
Our mission team was much like many other teams, loud, laughing and praising the Lord as we traveled along the Pan American Highway in Honduras. Suddenly, we came around a curve and were in the midst of a traffic jam.
Even in rural Honduras, it is not uncommon to encounter traffic gridlock along the highway. Tragically, it usually means there is an accident and more often than not, one of the vehicles is a semi-truck. On the day we were traveling the Pan American Highway that is exactly what happened. A speeding semi-truck came barreling through the mountains in central Honduras, resulting in the death of one person.
As we past by the gruesome scene, we saw the body covered by a sheet lying on the side of the road. The accident must have just happened prior to us reaching that part of the highway. Our team all of a sudden grew silent and we lifted our hands in praise for God’s protection upon us and in prayer for the family of the one who died in the accident.
I praise God for the reminder that we have this moment in time and nothing more. David even tells us this in Psalm 144:4:
“Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.”
Life is measured in years, with some living longer than others live. We often forget that 80 years on earth is like a shadow that passes by quickly when compared to eternity, where there is no measure of time. I pray that the Lord gives you gentle reminders today that we have one moment in time and we are only a breath away from taking our last.
