Thoughts of Home

I do so enjoy Girl Scout cookies! So much so, that I even carry a box with me when I am out in remote jungles. It is amazing how one simple box of Girl Scout cookies can lift spirits and change moods. When we are surrounded by nothing but the jungle canopy and everyone is depressed or discouraged, eaten up with bugs and weary from the hot weather, I pull out a box of Girl Scout cookies and instantly, life gets good again!

I was in the Congo when a little girl had just died and everyone was depressed. My friend’s daughter was particularly sad. That is when I pulled out a box of Girl Scout cookies and handed them to her to share with everyone. Instead of sharing the gift she received, this girl ate the entire box of peanut butter Girl Scout cookies! It is not how I had intended the gift to be used, but at least it lifted her spirits. To this day, I send her a case of cookies every year just to keep her right.

When our spirits our low, let’s try to remember that the things that remind us of home can lift our hearts. Look around you today and find those things. Better yet, look up today and be reminded of the home we have waiting for us with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

No matter how discouraged or depressed we may get, we can be sure that our time here on earth is fleeting, yet, our hope is not in this world, but in the world to come.

Paul reminds us in Philippians 3:20:

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
