Triumph Over Spiritual Forces

[ 0 ] March 23, 2008 |

If you sat down today to write in your journal, what would you write about the days in which we live? Barbecues will be firing up, friends and family will be gathering and fireworks will light up the skies as this nation soon celebrates the Fourth of July.

Let me tell you about what my friend, Murdock Murphy, had to say about this nation. Speaking about our military, he said the events of the war reflected honor upon the military of the United States. “Our enemy cannot triumph over us,” Murdock said. He also spoke about the president, saying, “I don’t believe the president was at fault. No one can stem the current. The helm was in his hand in tempestuous weather. He did what he could.”

Murdock penned these words on May 6, 1850, a time in our history when states were divided on the issue of slavery. As we prepare to celebrate the birthday of our great country, let me encourage you to thank the Lord for America and for those who serve and lead her. Keep her in your prayers this day and forever.

Throughout our nation’s history we have battled many enemies in war and over issues such as slavery. As a Christian, our greatest enemy is one in which we can’t see, but one which is very powerful. We are reminded in Ephesians 6:10-12:

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Let me warn you, when you serve the Lord and choose to follow Him, you will have battles with the powers of this dark world. But, Christ died so that we may be empowered to overcome this world and be victorious.
