Unto the Least of These

[ 0 ] June 8, 2006 |

Many of us are blessed to have certain “heroes” in our lives. I am certainly blessed to have some wonderful heroes in my life, such as Dr. David Seel. Dr. Seel retired in 1990 after having worked at the Presbyterian Medical Center (Jesus Hospital) in Chonju, Korea, as well as at the Yonsei University Wonju College of Medicine, better known as the Wonju Christian Hospital, located in the Province of Kangwon.

Dr. Seel worked in the cancer department and dealt with patients with some particularly disfiguring and just awful tumors. He had to surgically remove the tumors and then attempt to do his best at reconstructing people’s faces that were horribly damaged by trauma and cancer.

Despite the horrendous circumstances he worked with, Dr. Seel said something quite profound, “Could I possibly remember that every face in the long parade deserves the love, the respect and the compassion that I would show to Jesus Christ himself?”

Dr. Seel modeled the very essence of Matthew 25:40, which says:

“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”

Look around you today and determine how you can be a “hero” in someone’s life. If you cannot think of a tangible way to assist someone today then at least offer up a prayer for someone you know who is in need. Each time we reach out to help someone in need, we touch the very face of God.
